That's called taking the Bible out of context, which means that they pull out verses to share with others that sound like they support the particular subject they are talking about. It becomes apparent when you read about a chapter [about a column] before that verse and a chapter after it.
The reason this is so significant to me is that when I was a young adult, a couple did this and used many verses in the Bible out of context to prove my faith in Christ was wrong. I was so confused and went home to look those verses up. When I did so, I found that the literal meaning of the verse by itself may sound like it supported what they said to me, but when I read everything before and after it, it was talking about some war situation or some other unrelated topic to what they said it supported.
If I could get confused by people taking things out of context, then it can happen to anyone! Double Check and make sure that those you listen to, whether it's friends, ministers, TV evangelists, other Christians are using the Bible verses they are quoting accurately and that they really pertain to the topic being discussed according to how it's used in relation to the rest of the chapter in the Bible.
Revelation 22: 18 For
I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book,
If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that
are written in this book, 19 And if any man shall take away from the words
of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away His part out of the book of
life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this
book.
